What is CODA project?

The CODA project (COntroller adaptive Digital Assistant) involves developing an air traffic management (ATM) system in which control tasks are performed collaboratively by human-machine hybrid teams. To do so, the system put together state of art from different fields.
- Neurophysiological assessment of mental states to enable the system to know operators’ real current level of workload, attention, stress, fatigue, and vigilance maximising the effectiveness of the interaction between the human and the machine
- Prediction models to foresee future situations and let the system know which activities will be carried out by the operators and their impact on the human performance
- AI-based adaptable systems, to have the system act to prevent future performance or safety issues.
In this way, the system will be able to assess the mental state of air traffic controllers (e.g. level of workload, stress and other relevant human factors), evaluate their impact in terms of cognitive complexity and assign them tasks to be performed.The digital assistance proposed by the project will support air traffic operators in carrying out their tasks, increasing safety and efficiency in air transport management.
